Dr. Anil Nair Is The First Physician In Northern N.J. To Use Pioneering Stryker Surpass Streamline Flow Diverter To Treat Patient With Life-Threatening Aneurysm


(Union, NJ- October 30, 2019) – Dr. Anil Nair’s recent use of the groundbreaking Stryker Surpass Streamline Flow Diverter in the operating room provides a prime example of a world-class physician and a pioneering aneurysm treatment device coming together to remedy a dire, life-threatening situation.


Dr. Nair, a board-certified neurosurgeon with IGEA Brain, Spine & Orthopedics, was the first to use the cutting-edge Stryker Surpass Streamline Flow Diverter in Northern N.J., when he treated an aneurysm patient recently at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson.


The patient, Isolyn Minott from Essex County was brought to the hospital after fainting in her kitchen. Dr. Nair diagnosed Mrs. Minott as having a large, unruptured aneurysm, a potentially fatal ballooning of a brain artery due to weakened blood vessel walls. Dr. Nair discussed the option of using the Stryker Surpass Streamline Flow Diverter to treat the condition via minimally invasive endovascular neurosurgery.


An estimated 6 million people in the United States have an unruptured brain aneurysm. Some 30,000 people annually in the United States experience a ruptured brain aneurysm, with 40 percent of those cases being fatal. Patients with large and giant aneurysms can face a particularly high risk of rupture and are often difficult to treat.


The innovative Surpass Streamline Flow Diverter is the first flow diverting stent made specifically for large and giant posterior communicating artery aneurysms on the internal carotid artery within the brain. The heavy-duty, braided stent constructed of a cobalt-chromium alloy is placed into the patient’s arterial system via a small catheter and expands to fit the contours of the artery. It then redirects blood flow away from the aneurysm, restoring normal flow and reducing risks of a rupture, thereby limiting the need for repeat or additional procedures.


Flow diversion is a new way to treat intracranial aneurysms. It is unique because it focuses on the diseased part of the vessel where vessel wall weakening has caused an aneurysm. A flow diverting stent is designed to divert blood flow through the vessel and restore the vessel wall in order to facilitate natural blood flow through the vessel and away from the aneurysm, causing the condition to clot off over time, thereby reducing the risk of rupture. As a result of the groundbreaking Surpass design, patients may experience a faster rate of embolization and have a reduction in the need for additional treatment.
