WHEN TO SEEK TREATMENT

Symptoms of different bicep injuries and conditions can vary widely from patient to patient. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it may be time to seek treatment:

  • Difficulty bending your arm in certain directions
  • Inflammation and swelling around the shoulder, elbow, or biceps
  • Weakness or a giving-out sensation in the arm
  • Stiffness
  • Pain

BICEP CONDITIONS WE TREAT

IGEA Brain, Spine & Orthopedics provides exceptional orthopedic care for patients who are suffering from bicep pain. We are able to accurately diagnose and treat a wide range of bicep conditions, including the following:

  • Tendonitis

Also known as biceps tendinitis, this condition causes inflammation in the long tendon connecting the biceps to your shoulder. It is often caused by wear-and-tear and aging. In some cases, however, tendonitis is exacerbated by repetitive motions from sports or the workplace. In most cases, tendonitis can be treated successfully through physical therapy.

  • Tendon Tears

Most tendon tears are the result of overuse. Repetitive motion wears down the tissue, weakening it and increasing the chances of injury after a sudden pull or fall. This most commonly occurs at the shoulder as a proximal tear. More rarely, the tendon tears at the elbow, which is more debilitating. Physical therapy and conservative treatments are often sufficient for partial tears, though some individuals may prefer surgery.

  • Ruptured Biceps

Sometimes, a tendon tear may become a ruptured bicep. This occurs when the tendon that connects the biceps and shoulder completely tears, often caused by a previous tear or age-related wear. Some cases are related to impingement, a condition that pinches soft tissues between the shoulder blade and the ball of the upper arm bone (humerus). Ruptured biceps almost always require surgery to reattach the broken connective tissue.

OUR STATE-OF-THE-ART TREATMENT OPTIONS

We offer a broad range of treatment options to patients with bicep injuries and conditions. In many cases, conservative methods are sufficient, such as nonsteroidal, over-the-counter medications to reduce swelling and pain. More severe injuries may necessitate a cortisone injection. Meanwhile, you will be directed to rest your arm using a sling before restoring movement, building strength, and preventing future injury through physical therapy.

We also have an experienced in-house surgeon who we can repair injured biceps through a variety of surgical options. He can reattach frayed or torn tendons to the bone or fully release them depending on your unique circumstances and needs. Many of these procedures can be done arthroscopically as well, ensuring precision while keeping the procedure minimally invasive.
