WHAT IS COFLEX®?

The coflex® Interlaminar Stabilization® device is a non-fusion solution that effectively treats spinal stenosis of the low back. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal, which places pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. This results in pain, numbness or weakness in the legs.

For patients living with moderate to severe spinal stenosis of the low back, surgery is required when all other treatment methods have failed. Traditionally, fusion surgery is performed to surgically treat the condition. During fusion surgery, some or all of the spinal disc—the cushion between the vertebrae—is removed and the vertebrae are welded together with a bone graft. In some cases, rods and screws are put in place to keep the spine stable until the fusion of the two vertebrae is complete. However, in doing so, the affected section of the spine loses its flexibility.

Conversely, the coflex® device is an FDA-approved titanium implant that lets the spine remain stable without fusing the vertebrae together, allowing for greater movement and natural motion. It also maintains the normal space between each vertebra to avoid nerve compression.

HOW DOES COFLEX ® WORK?

The coflex® device is designed to be placed on the laminar bone, the strongest portion of the spine in the low back. After the affected disc material is removed (known as spinal decompression), the device is implanted on the laminar through the same small incisions that are made in the body to perform the decompression.

Implanting coflex® is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces the risk of complications and shortens recovery.
