Slouched shoulders and a pair of eyes looking down at a bright little screen. Sound familiar? As technology moves forward and smartphones become a staple of our everyday lives, our posture seems to be changing for the worst. According to research conducted by Dr. Kenneth Hansraj, our cranium becomes heavier as we bend our neck to look down at our phone screens. This can eventually put pressure on the spine and lead to back pain.
Dr. Hansraj, chief of spine surgery at New York Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine, found that bending your neck at a 60-degree angle could place 60 pounds of pressure on the cervical spine. Even bending your head 15 degrees can place 27 pounds of pressure on your back, while bending it at 30 and 45 degrees can place pressures of 40 and 49 pounds, respectively.
The researcher additionally revealed that the increased stress the cervical spine is submitted to can lead to “early wear, tear, degeneration and possible surgeries.” According to the studies, proper posture decreases the amount of spinal stress, but this isn’t the only benefit of good alignment. Good posture can additionally make you look better and help optimize your overall health.
