A COLLECTION OF BLOOD AROUND THE BRAIN CAN BE LIFE THREATING UNTIL NOW

Leading Neurosurgeons Performing Life Saving Less Invasive Brain Surgery Known as Middle Meningeal Artery Embolization for Treatment of Chronic Subdural Hematoma.

(New Jersey and NYC – October 4, 2018) Head Trauma happens to people frequently from all type of causes including automobile accidents, athletic injuries, and is seen in older individuals who experience a bad fall or from a mild head injury while on blood thinners. What exactly is subdural hematoma? It is a collection of blood outside the brain usually caused by head trauma, sometimes even a mild one. The blood leads to increased pressure on the brain which can cause serious symptoms such as weakness, confusion, and headaches and can even be life-threatening. Some subdural hematomas stop and resolve spontaneously; others require surgical drainage. The surgical drainage would often be performed through open brain surgery and was considered the best solution to alleviate the collection of blood around the brain. Unfortunately, this invasive surgery procedure has been reported to have a recurrence rate of over 30%.

Through medical technology advancement and skilled doctors, there is a new technique that is less invasive with better results for patients. Drs. Anil Nair and Ciro Randazzo of IGEA Brain, Spine & Orthopedics in New Jersey and New York are medical trailblazers performing what is known as Middle Meningeal Artery Embolization for Treatment of Chronic Subdural Hematomas.

This new surgical approach performed in the past year at IGEA Brain, Spine & Orthopedics is achieving excellent results for patients while also being minimally invasive. Dr. Nair explains, “The surgery is performed via a microcatheter that starts in the leg and travels up to the head to inject a glue-like substance known as Onyx into the vessels that supply the subdural hematoma in order to remove the collection of blood. This is a much more comfortable and less stressful procedure for patients than open brain surgery and has been giving us outstanding results.”

Dr. Anil Nair and Dr. Ciro Randazzo have performed this life-saving surgery for many of their patients who now are living more productive lives without the worry of the subdural hematoma returning.
